Joseph (West) Paul, M.D., Ph.D.

Joseph (West) Paul, M.D., Ph.D., is presently Chief Quality Officer at WakeMed Health and Hospitals in Raleigh North Carolina. He also serves as a member of the board of the North Carolina Hospital Quality Association.

Prior to his current position, Dr. Paul served as Chair of the Division of Consultative and Diagnostic Medicine at Mayo Clinic in Florida. He served as associate director of the Internal Medicine Residency program Mayo School of Graduate Medical Education and medical director of the Pharmacy and Perioperative Clinic. Dr. Paul also chaired the Clinical Practice Quality Oversight Committee and was Vice Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine Mayo Clinic Florida. Dr. Paul holds the academic rank of assistant professor of medicine. He attended Duke University for his undergraduate degree and East Carolina University School of Medicine, where he earned both the M.D. degree and the doctorate of philosophy degree in Pharmacology. He completed medical residency training in the Department of Internal Medicine at Mayo Clinic.

Dr. Paul practices diagnostics in concert with disease prevention and health promotion and continues to serve on the Medicine teaching service at WakeMed Health & Hospitals. As an internist, he provides a continuum of care between the hospital and the outpatient setting, and is adept at caring for patients with multi system disease. His research interests include Clinical Pharmacology, therapeutic evaluation of long-term drug therapy, phase “0” clinical studies, biomarkers, neuro degenerative disease and quality improvement of medication use and safety.

Dr. Paul currently holds two patents for his work. He has published in peer-reviewed journals and been honored as an invited presenter and visiting professor at conferences and lectures throughout the United States, Europe and in the Bahamas. He has received many awards of teaching excellence for his achievements in education.

Dr. Paul’s professional memberships include: the American Medical Association, the American College of Physicians, the American College of Clinical Pharmacology and the Society for Neuroscience, among others. He is past president for the Officers & Councilors of Staff at Mayo Clinic in Florida and past Chair of Service Excellence for Mayo Clinic in Florida.
