PRC announces new Chief Medical Officer and Institute for Healthcare Excellence

Dr-MaplesWilliam Maples, M.D., will be joining Professional Research Consultants, Inc., (PRC) as its first Chief Medical Officer.  He will also serve as Executive Director and Chief Experience Officer of PRC’s newly formed subsidiary, The Institute for Healthcare Excellence, LLC.

The Institute for Healthcare Excellence (IHE) will be a collaboration of industry experts and thought leaders focused on improving the design of patient, family, and caregiver experiences to create an environment of excellence. The Institute has been created to serve as a vehicle through which PRC can bring industry experts and independent contractors under the PRC umbrella to provide world-class consulting to clients when they need resources outside the scope of research alone. IHE will use insights gained from PRC’s custom research to help clients create action plans geared to deliver on their strategic healthcare priorities.

It will also guide process improvement for hospitals and health systems by partnering with clients to customize strategies including, but not limited to:

• Promote positive outcomes through effective communication among healthcare providers, staff, patients, family, and caregivers;

• Enhance brand positioning to reflect a reputation for excellence;

• Deliver consulting expertise to help ensure that physicians and staff are aligned and engaged so they can focus on improving the patient experience.

As it launches, the Institute’s signature element will be the initiative Dr. Maples is leading to improve quality, safety, and the patient experience through more effective communication. This initiative has successfully improved both patient and provider satisfaction scores at hospitals and health systems across the country, including PRC clients at Mission Health in Asheville, N.C., and Nemours Children’s Health System hospitals in Florida, Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

For the last four years, Dr. Maples was responsible for quality and safety throughout Mission Health in Asheville, N.C. Named one of the Top 15 Health Systems in the United States by Thomson Reuters in 2012, and Truven Health Analytics in 2013 and 2014, Mission Health is a $1.2 billion integrated health system serving western North Carolina.

Before joining Mission in December 2010, Dr. Maples was a 25-year practicing physician/oncologist and quality leader at Mayo Clinic.  He also served as an Associate Professor of Oncology at Mayo’s College of Medicine and as a Clinical Professor at Brooks College of Health at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville. At Mayo, he worked with key leadership to implement a quality program, which included the creation of the Communication in Healthcare curriculum that was integral to Mayo Clinic Florida achieving top national performance ratings in patient satisfaction during his tenure.

Dr. Maples earned his undergraduate and medical degrees at the University of Wisconsin–Madison and completed his residency and fellowship in oncology at the Mayo Graduate School College of Medicine.

This blog will be a platform for dialogue concerning patient, family, and caregiver experience work. We welcome your comments.
